Fireflies and Emily Driscoll

In the U.S. and Japan, scientists are working to preserve firefly habitats in urban settings by exploring the effect of artificial nightlights on firefly populations. These conservation efforts are chronicled in the film “Brilliant Darkness: Hotaru in the Night.” We see a clip from this film and then speak with the science filmmaker behind the project, Emily Driscoll, to discuss the significance of the night on animal biology and lifecycles.
